Making the health system more efficient and equitable
Six-month status report – September 29, 2008
The Alberta government announced a plan on April 16 to take action on a wide range of initiatives aimed at making the province’s health care system more efficient and effective.
On September 29, a status report was released to document progress made on immediate, three-month and six-month initiatives identified in the action plan.
The report covers:
- A new provincial health services board to govern all health services in the province;
- A plan to transfer responsibility for ground ambulance services from municipalities to the new provincial health authority by April 1, 2009;
- A provincewide (Human Papillomavirus) HPV vaccination program available to all girls entering Grade 5 this fall as a measure to prevent 70 per cent of cervical cancers;
- Training health providers to manage a provincewide patient navigator system;
- New education seats for physicians, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses; (new)
- Nutrition guidelines for children and youth; (new) and
- A Children's Mental Health Plan to increase access to children's mental health services. (new)
